Westerly Conway 35 – 1979

€48 000

General Information

Westerly W35 – 1979 Extensively Updated for Cruising and Live aboard

Updated 2020-2024 with almost everything from standing rig to electronics and interior

The Westerly W35 (36), a very rare variation of the Laurent Giles designed Conway, Westerly’s flagship of its time. The Westerly Conway was big news when first launched in 1974. Soon after, her sisterships, the Galway and Medway came along to widen the model range. In 1978 Westerly began the production of a limited number of W35’s, only 3 hulls were reported to have been produced, and each was built using upgraded materials and equipment. The W35 uses the same well proven 36ft Conway hull but was designed specifically for a couple to undertake extended voyages comfortably. Unique features such as an abundance of storage lockers, a ‘deep’ aft cockpit, a larger salon, and of course the wonderful seakeeping and sailing characteristics made the W35 a turnkey choice for long term voyaging. It is easy to see why the Westerly Conway was such popular cruising yacht in the 70’s and 80’s and still is due to its fantastic build quality and proven performance and stability.

‘SY Tonic’ a 36ft aft-cockpit, fin-keeled yacht with wheel steering, and masthead Bermudan sloop rig is ready to live aboard, and most importantly is 100% ready to set sail this summer.

Full renovation and upgrades completed in 2020-21 by the current owner (including modernization to make comfortable for living aboard) and lots of later upgrades till now. The boat has been sailed 6,000NM from the UK, currently residing in Portugal, and has been part-time lived aboard since 2021.

This relatively small boat is the perfect, safe and quality designed cruiser, very comfortable in even rough sea. For a couple wanting to cruise the oceans, live-aboard or even just to have her for more coastal sailing, she is a great choice in quality, comfort and not least a size that make costs for marinas at a lower level than just a few meters larger boats. She has all the ready-to-go cruising options you want, such as large stainless steel targa arch on the aft with 430 W Solar panels, Wind Generator etc. Also large 20kg Rocna anchor with 70 meter 8mm anchor chain. New instruments all over, including new digital radar, AIS, all LED lights, standing rigg (purchased 2017 / installed 2020) and much more.

Here you have the type of boat that is simply built to last and with quality details and long-lasting solutions. Westerly is well known in UK and northern Europe, and often compared to boats like Hallberg-Rassy, Moody and Malö from the years where shipyards build yachts with hull thickness and build quality to last. Very large storage capacity both in cockpit and inside the boat is simply unique and will be highly appreciated when cruising.

Her deep cockpit is a good design feature. It feels very secure when you’re out at sea, moving about or trimming. The large arch in the aft carrying solar panels and wind generator is also an extra safety feature when moving around on aft deck, as well as useful for lines, fishing rods, fenders or other.

Two seats in the aft corners will be your favorite spot when cruising in steady weather and enjoy the waves, and sea life fully.

This 1979, Westerly W35 has proved itself in all types of sea and weather, both in the colder northerly hemisphere in UK, along the Atlantic coast of Europe, The Bay of Biscay and parts of the Mediterranean SY TONIC is now in the well protected Marina de Lagos on the sunny coast of Algarve in Portugal, waiting for her new owner. She is ready to go with the many updates and regular maintenance. Berth in Marina de Lagos has been paid till June 2025.

On S/Y TONIC you get a long list of improvements and updates, as she was made ready for Blue Water Cruising by her current owner. …. Just look at the specification and the amazing list of updates and rebuild interior in later years.

In the cockpit, everything is optimally placed so that the boat can be sailed single-handed or by two people. The high backrests in the cockpit provide comfort and convenience, and under the large sprayhood you are well protected from the elements.

When you come down the stairs to the saloon, you are greeted by a bright and updated interior, with all new grey/white quality textiles. The floor in classic teak and with good storage spaces underneath. Headroom approx. 1,90 mtrs

On Port side is the navigation area with everything needed for instruments, communication, and navigation as well as a panel for electrical installations and control of the switch panel. All electronic installations have been renewed and rewired and well documented and have easy access.

Also on the Port side behind the navigation area, a large aft area with huge storage facilities and most electronic installations (used to be a narrow seabunk). Lots of space for storage, sails, covers etc., or another refrigerator or freezer. Today even a stand-alone Air-condition unit is stored in here.

On the Starboard side is the galley area with, sink, 2-burner stove, w grill plate and oven and a good size fridge in countertop. Good space for all kitchenware, food etc.

In front of the galley and navigation area you find the saloon with a huge rebuilt sofa/double bed on port side and one long sofa that transform to a wide single bed if needed on the starboard side. Between the sofas is a large removeable table between with foldable sides, where at least 4-6 people comfortable can sit around the table, and if you are more than 2 people aboard the saloon can be used for 3 more persons sleeping. Everything in the saloon has been rebuilt by current owner, and many smart and practical solutions with lockers for storage, instead of shelfs. Besides with all new canvas, the owner also insulated the boat, both to secure nice indoor climate but also avoid humidity. Table in Saloon can be moved to cockpit and thereby provide an outdoor sitting area with table between.

A double cabin (Owners Cabin) in the forward part of the boat has wardrobes and storage. Between the forward cabin and the saloon is the roomy head with head/toilet and shower.

The current owner prepared her for Blue Water Cruising, ensuring that all aspects of the boat are the highest quality, with the expectation of trouble-free sailing for an extended period. The owner lived part time aboard but now have other work and leisure commitments so has decided to let SY TONIC move on to new owners who may fully enjoy a ready to sail and live aboard boat in a comfortable size.

She is currently UK registered and from the days before EU VAT requirements on boats and from the days when UK was part of the European Union. Owner is a certified boat surveyor, and therefore skilled in what is and was needed to have the boat in best condition. This is a boat you must see!
