Shannon 38 – Beautiful Classic Ocean safe long keel design
Amazingly updated Classic Quality Yacht that stands out in beauty and seaworthiness. A boat you must see. This is the perfect and very affordable Cruising Yacht for a couple who want to travel safe and with style!
The Shannon 38, designed by legendary boatbuilder Walt Schultz was build by Shannon Yachts (USA) in 1978. A world cruising sailboat stands as a testament to classical design and beautiful workmanship. Some probably read the stories by legendary sailor and author Beth Leonard, who circumnavigated in a Shannon 38 proven her seaworthiness and potentials for adventures. Shannon sailboats have been featured in many notable publications including both volumes of “The World’s Best Sailboats” by Ferenc Mate.
Even today you are astonished by the Shannon boat company and their current models and not least their history. On their website you can read: “The Shannon 39 (todays version of their smallest sailing yacht) evolved from the Shannon 38 hull which launched the company in 1975 and still holds the record for the model that has completed the most circumnavigations by Shannon owners”. Shannon has been designed for long-range offshore cruising. The keel is long and full and a draft of only 1,52m (5 ft).
The Shannon 38 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with teak wooden trim. It has a cutter rig with aluminum spars, a raked stem, a raised counter transom, a keel-mounted rudder controlled by a wheel and a fixed long keel.
The interior design include sleeping accommodation for four to five people. The drop-leaf dinette table folds and has two settee berths. The bow cabin berth is a double. The galley is located at the foot of the companionway steps on the starboard side and includes a two-burner propane stove with grill plate, a gas oven and a refrigerator plus an extra fridge/freezer. The head is aft of the bow cabin and on the starboard side. Interior trim is of oiled teak.
Ventilation is provided by four dorado vents, 12 bronze ports and two deck hatches, one over the bow cabin and one over the main cabin. There is an aft vapor-proof propane locker, with external, overboard venting.
For sailing there are eight winches fitted for the halyards, staysail, mainsheet, genoa and reefing. There also are mainsail and staysail travelers provided.
Large Cockpit with original quality cushions. Cockpit Coamings with nice size storage compartments and vented storage for 2 propane tanks. A new beautiful Sprayhood and a Bimini fixed to a steel arch protects you from natures elements, but also carry the large 400W solar panel.
Coming down companionway into the salon there is the galley to starboard and the forward facing nav station to port. Aft of the nav station is a quarter berth w/storage area. A large two leaf table, with nice bottle storage, separates the two settees. Forward to port is a shelf and hanging locker on your way to the vee berth. Large head aft to starboard has a sink, head and telephone style shower w/ a large teak grate. All cushions in the boat have beautiful new quality upholstery. All teak recently refreshed with teak oil. White painted ceiling in the saloon gives a nice finish and brighter but still classic feeling.
Sleeping Arrangements for up to six. The quarter berth aft of Nav Station sleeps two. The main salon sleeps two with starboard settee pulling out sleeping two and even port side settee pulls out for one more. The V-Berth sleeps two.
History of the boat:
The boat has had a total of 7 owners over the years. The first 5 owners were Americans and sailed to our knowledge mainly in US waters but also crossed to Europe and back. Owner number 6 sailed from the US to Europe. From what the owner can see, the boat has done 5 transatlantic journeys, really proving the capabilities and strength of the boat. Current owner have sailed 6 months a year. Sailed Portuguese waters, to Gibraltar and Morocco and to the Azores and back. Due to health issues and age, the current owner now decided to let his beloved Hunters Moon move on to new owners.
